A History of River Parish Golf Association
The River Parish Golf Association was formed in 1997. The original membership included approximately nineteen (19) gentlemen from the Belle Terre Golf and Country Club in LaPlace, LA. Randal Ross served as the first president of the Association. The club adopted two shirt colors (yellow and salmon). “The Association was formed and exists for the purpose of promoting and conserving the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf as embodied in its ancient and honorable traditions.
The Association remained inactive for a number of years and was reactivated in 2008 by John L. Smith and Ernest Parquet. John Brown served as vice-president until 2011. Tony Fisher served as financial secretary and Earnest Parquet served as recording secretary. Under Smith’s leadership, RPGA adopted its first set of bylaws. A board of directors was established and various standing and ad hoc committees were put in place. The Association was officially chartered by the State of Louisiana on February 11, 2013. On May 5, 2013 the Association was awarded a federal EIN number and filed application for 501(3)(c) non-profit status with the IRS, which was awarded On september 18, 2014.
AN ASSOCIATION WITH TRADITION
Over the past 18 years the association has grown from nineteen members to a current membership of forty nine (49). The association’s calendar of events include more than nineteen amateur and championship outings played on golf courses throughout the state with one out-of-state event. The calendar also includes an array of social outings (Theater Night, New Orleans Coolinary Event, Spring and Fall Golf Outing and Picnic, Annual Christmas Party). There are four (4) official shirt colors used by association members (Blue, Yellow, White, and Red). Each shirt is embossed with the club’s logo. Names or nicknames on shirts are optional. All members wear the same color shirt during each sanctioned event.
Over the years RPGA has built and maintained strong working relationships with the USGA, the PGA of America, Louisiana Golf Association and local golf associations to promote the game of golf. The Rules of Play in RPGA are governed by the USGA and the Louisiana Golf Association provides an ever-growing handicap service to our members.
